Deputy Sheriff Robert Haskell may seem laid-back, but he's a tough and efficient cop -- and he's none too thrilled to see feebs on his turf -- even when one of the agents is smart, handsome, and probably gay. But a butchered body in a Native American museum is out of his small town department's league. For that matter, icy, uptight Adam Darling is out of Rob's league, but that doesn't mean Rob won't take his best shot.

Loading interface Gould has been the best partner Adam has ever had and she could care less that Adam is gay. Darling has been relegated to checking on found bodies to see if they are Ripper bodies. Its a thankless job but at least he's still an Agent for the FBI. Rob is also gay and he's drawn to Darling. He and Adam decide they will make a night of it in the cabin that Darling is staying in while in Nearby. The two of them make beautiful music together and Rob is rather disappointed when Darling and Gould head back to California.

Three months later Darling and his new partner Russell are back are in Nearby. A murder was committed on Federal Property. The murdered woman is Cynthia Joseph and her murder will kick off violence in little Nearby. So begins a damned fine read. This one has Rob, Adam, Frankie, Zeke, Native American folklore, a missing Tiffany Joseph, a ravens mask stolen from the local museum where Joseph died, a missing knife, a man who dresses like a raven, Buck Campbell, a kid named Dove Koletar, his mother, old photos that hold the key, the towns people on a search for a missing girl, an Adam who finds another skeleton when he falls down a slope while on that search, a man named Bechtel, a kidnapped Adam, Agent Sam Kennedy of the FBI's BAU, Adams partner Farrell who's a self serving idiot and Adam and Rob on the search to find a murderer solve the crime and find out how they really feel about each other.

Five Stars. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. The story is well-paced and gripping and the characters are really interesting and well-drawn. The negatives are relatively small niggles but they do impact on my enjoyment of the book and should have been caught by a professional editor.

Firstly, there's a passage in which one of the main characters deliberately locks a door. Another character then enters the building without having any means to unlock it. There's also a description of a hand-dug tunnel more than yards long. A highly improbable distance for a single digger; much, much longer than is really feasible. Even so, highly recommended.

I love Lanyon's books and this had genuinely scary, unsettling and enjoyable parts. But overall I was meh about Rob and Adam. Particularly Rob. He wasn't very nice, or a very good cop. He was immature and couldn't take the work seriously, belittled Adam, and made him feel guilty. All in all, a solidly average read. Report abuse. Loved this story, it keeps you on your toes, with so many things being thrown at you from all sides.

Rob is a deputy in the small community of Nearly, where the owner of the tiny museum is found murdered. While they're working on this, a skeleton is found, and the sheriff thinks it might be one of the serial killers victims that the FBI is working on, and asks them for their help, and they send Adam and his partner Jonnie who are following up any leads to the serial killer, who targets gay men.

As soon as Adam sets eyes on Rob there's an instant attraction between the two, who work together gathering evidence. There's a strong that will keep you guessing, but also a sweet love story in the background.

Josh writes a great story and this js definetly one of them. Josh Lanyon does it again. This book is a great read set in a sleepy nothing ever happens town in Oregon. Where everybody think they know their neighbours but do they? The FBI are invited to look at body from a possible 30 year old murder. Is it linked to an on going serial killer investigation? They have lost of grafting to do on the case and on a burgeoning relationship.

Taut and well written as always by Josh with main characters you will be rooting for. It's a Josh Lanyon book, do I need to say any more than that. It's only a couple of his books that where not to his standard. If it had been any one else, they would have been good.

He is a favorite narrator and really delivers. Any additional comments? The story is you.. This got better after the first 4 chapters I really like Gomez reading your books, Josh. I first listened to this book years ago when I first started on Audible.

Having listened to hundreds of books since then it hit me around chapter 3 just how much better this book and this author are to most of the others. I am now going to relisten to all of the books I have by this talented person who has given me great stories that I love so much. This story had an interesting mystery. The plot had enough layers and misdirection to keep the reader guessing.

The romance had an antagonists to lovers feel to it. The story can be read as a standalone, but fans who read all of Josh Lanyon's books will find some Easter Eggs. I recommend reading at least the first book in the All's Fair and the Art of Murder series if you want to catch them. This book was published before the Mermaid Murders, but for me this story had more impact when I read it after The Mermaid Murders.

The narration was performed well, and I recommend this story if you want a twisty murder mystery with a dash of romance. I found an author that I intend to read as much as possible. It's not the first book I've read, and I like the atmosphere and the writing that the author created. I started to explore and understand that there are small connections between stories and other books, which makes me curious and excited to continue reading the author's stories.

Regarding Winter Kill, I practically only took a break from reading, as I was always curious to know what would happen and who was who. I read the book with the Audiobook, and it was beautiful. I enjoyed the narrator's work, and it allowed me to visualize the scenarios and dialogue in my mind.

The story maintains a fast pace while showing us the unfolding of a - immediate - relationship between the two main characters: Adam and Rob.

Very different from each other, but closer than they think. His rhythm is different; he doesn't use emotions but facts and evidence. On the other hand, Rob is more emotional, caring, and empathetic to people - but one of the best cops in the small town where he lives. When the two collide in the case that falls to their feet, it's interesting to see how their personalities intertwine and their relationship blossoms in a few days. The case is thrilling and keeps us curious about possible theories.

I noticed some loose ends mainly from some background characters , but I've also seen that it's a bit of the author's style, as I felt the same way in a previous book. I don't think that everything is that fast in real life, especially in making decisions; however, I'm reading a story, and I don't want everything to be real - for that, I already live day-to-day.

I liked it a lot, and I will continue to read the author's stories. With a bit of romance. I really liked both of the main characters in this book. The mystery was very good-a serial killer on the loose-that held my interest throughout the story. I wish that there were more books in this series! The narrator was excellent, as always! I love Josh Lanyon' books! I especially like the series that this spins off from.

However, this book seems so unlike her others. The writing was too simple and not as clever or interesting. I thought my head was going to spin off after the millionth "he said". What got me hooked with her other books were the witticisms, great character build, and suspenseful writing features I feel fall flat in this one.

It didn't quite hit the mark for me.
